[read more]

  • Practical Application of the Lambda Calculus

There are (number? 2) types of programmers in the world, those who understand the lambda calculus and those who do not. It is widely believed that the former are superior to the latter. Since success in your career depends on being viewed as superior to the other programmers who you compete against for jobs, raises and promotions, I'm going to teach you everything you need to know about the lambda calculus in five bite sized portions. 1. The lambda calculus is a system of formal logic that deals... [read more]

  • “Excel cannot insert the sheets into the destination workbook, because it contains fewer rows and columns…”

When you receive this error in Microsoft Excel, it would seem to be pretty self explanatory. Excel cannot insert the sheets into the destination workbook, because it contains fewer rows and columns than the source workbook. To move or copy the data to the destination workbook, you can select the data, and then use Copy and Paste commands to insert it into the sheets of another workbook. Excel 2003 and earlier spreadsheets (XLS file extension) has a max of 65,536 rows and 256 columns. With Excel ... [read more]

  • Insert and send a calendar!

During the summer season, I like to travel and visit my family and friends. Before I leave the office for my trips, I share these important dates with my colleagues so they know that I won’t be around the office. Instead of sending an email message to my colleagues with a list of dates, I prefer to include a visual representation of my calendar. On the Insert tab, in the Include group, click Calendar. I choose which calendar that I want to include in my message. After I click OK , my calen... [read more]

  • CoApp FAQ: A few important distinctions.

(cross-posted from the mailing list ) It’s been suggested a few times over the last several weeks that CoApp won’t provide any value for the .NET community. With the emergence of several alternative projects to provide a form of package management (NPack, OpenWrap, nu-net, and others), I figured I’d better make some time to explain how CoApp and .NET get along.   Q: Isn’t CoApp about packaging applications? A: Well, oddly enough, the original vision for CoApp was less concerned about actual... [read more]

  • Introduction to TestApi – Part 8: Object Comparison API

General Notes Comparing two objects for equivalence is a relatively common task during test validation. For example, you might test whether a type follows the rules that are required by a particular serializer by saving and loading the object and comparing the two. In a deep object comparison, all the properties and their sub-properties are compared repeatedly until primitives are reached. The .NET Framework provides mechanisms to perform deep comparisons but requires the types to implement part... [read more]

  • Assigning records to a Queue

CRM MVP Kuba Skalbania is our guest blogger today. Kuba walks us through the concept of queues and record ownership. As most of you probably know, records owned by any user in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 can be assigned (‘assign’ action) to other users and they can be shared with other users or teams (‘share’ action). In CRM 4.0 records cannot be assigned to the team or any other record than the system user. ( Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 will introduce team ownership). However, some of you might ... [read more]

While working on a demo, I created a new site collection where the root web is a publishing site.  I wanted to add a blog to the site, so I went to Site Actions / New Site to create the blog, but couldn’t.  The only options available were “Publishing Site with Workflow” and “Enterprise Wiki”.  Hmm… odd.  I randomly started clicking around to see if I needed to perhaps enable a feature or something.  For instance, I made sure that the features were all activated for the S... • Windows 7 and Live@edu takes off

Two numeric examples of how fast things are moving forward in education ICT these days: Windows 7 is being rapidly adopted in universities The chart below shows the visitors to this blog this month. Which shows just how fast Windows 7 is being adopted, and displacing Windows XP and Windows Vista. As most readers of this blog are from UK universities, and most big system upgrades happen over the summer holidays, I’m guessing we’ll see Windows 7 racing ahead further by the start of the new term. • Troubleshoot ASP.NET Errors Remotely–while Appearing Local

For years I’ve wanted to be able to troubleshoot website remotely by seeing the detailed error report, while ensuring that other users on the web only see the friendly non-detailed error. This is now possible with URL Rewrite 2.0. Through a simple rule, you can make it appear to ASP.NET that you are testing from the local server, without opening it up to the rest of the world.  You can do this by using URL Rewrite to change the REMOTE_ADDR server variable, essentially fooling ASP.NET into t... Attendees get to hear from their fellow developers about something new and cool in a short, 20 minute presentation by one of their peers.
